Acupuncture improves the body’s functions and promotes the natural self-healing process by stimulating specific anatomic sites that are commonly referred to as acupuncture points. The most common method used to stimulate acupoints is the insertion of fine, sterile needles into the skin. There are hundreds of acupoints in the body along 14 major meridians, also called energy-carrying channels. These acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system which, in turn, releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These biochemical changes can stimulate the body's natural healing abilities and help the body to:
While you may be experiencing discomfort in one area, the acupoint may be in a different part of the body. Before the treatment begins, the acupuncturist will go over the general sites that they will focus on and whether you will need to remove any clothing. If necessary, a gown or sheet will be provided. The treatment will entail the following:
Insertion:
Acupuncture needles may be inserted at various depths into specific points in your body. The needles are very thin, meaning they usually only cause a little discomfort when they’re inserted. In some cases, people don’t even feel them going in. Generally, a typical acupuncture treatment consists of 5 to 20 needles.
Manipulation:
Once inserted, the acupuncturist will gently move or twirl, apply heat, or deliver mild electrical pulses to the needles.
Removal:
Oftentimes, the needles will remain in place for 10 to 15 minutes while you lie still and relax. After that, they’re removed with little to no discomfort.
